The Adventure of the Copper Beeches

A young governess named Violet Hunter seeks Holmes's advice about a strange job offer. A man named Mr. Jephro Rucastle wants to hire her at a very high salary — but with bizarre conditions: she must cut her hair short, wear a specific blue dress at certain times, and sit by a window when asked. Despite Holmes's warnings, Violet takes the job. At the Copper Beeches estate, she discovers that she is being used as a double for Mr. Rucastle's adult daughter, Alice, who is being secretly imprisoned in a private room. The Rucastles want to prevent Alice from inheriting money by showing "her" (Violet in disguise) alive and cheerful to a lawyer. Holmes rescues Alice and exposes the cruel scheme. Violet later opens her own successful school.
