Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a renowned British writer, physician, and literary figure best known for creating the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. Born in Edinburgh, he studied medicine and worked as a doctor before achieving fame as an author. Doyle introduced Sherlock Holmes in the novel A Study in Scarlet in 1887. The character quickly became one of the most famous detectives in literature, and Doyle went on to write numerous novels and short stories featuring Holmes and his loyal companion, Dr. John Watson. In addition to detective fiction, Doyle wrote historical novels, science fiction, plays, and essays. He also created the adventurous character Professor Challenger, who appeared in several science-fiction stories, including The Lost World. Later in life, Doyle developed a strong interest in spiritualism and the paranormal, which influenced much of his later writing and public activities. Despite his diverse literary career, he is remembered primarily for his contributions to detective fiction. His creation, Sherlock Holmes, remains one of the most iconic and enduring characters in world literature.
