Description
A wealthy landowner, Mr. Charles McCarthy, is found dead near a pool in Boscombe Valley, Australia. All evidence points to his son, James McCarthy, who was seen arguing with his father shortly before the murder. James is arrested and faces the death penalty. His childhood friend, Alice Turner, begs Holmes to investigate. Holmes visits the crime scene and discovers crucial clues: a secret meeting, a mysterious third person, and a strange reference to "a rat." Through careful reasoning, Holmes proves that the real killer was a former criminal named John Turner (Alice's father), who had a dark past with the victim in America. The murder was not premeditated but erupted from a heated argument about Turner's hidden identity. Holmes arranges a private confession, saving James from the gallows while keeping Turner's tragic past discreet.
